Flu outbreak puts Chicago-area hospitals on bypass.
The University of Chicago, Advocate Trinity, and Swedish Covenant hospitals in Chicago asked ambulances to take patients to other facilities, if possible, after an influx of flu patients crowded emergency rooms January 8. Northwestern Memorial was also on bypass until late that morning.

Emergency personnel are asking the Federal Communications Commission to approve their push to relay more information to the public on low- power AM radio stations regarding critical news when cable, Internet, and phones are out of service.

Two-alarm fire starts in Wakefield school’s carpentry shop.
A 2-alarm fire in a Wakefield school January 8 forced the evacuation of night classes at the facility. The fire was started in a shop class but spread after it was taken up into the ventilation system and was difficult to fight since the building did not have a sprinkler system.

Hacker hits on U.S. power and nuclear targets spiked in 2012.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that the number of cyber attacks against nuclear, power, and water infrastructure more than doubled in 2012, citing 198 cybersecurity incidents across the energy, chemical, nuclear, and water sectors.

Faulty switch causes Lorain to issue boil alert for 1,000 homes.
A broken fuse caused a power outage January 10 at a Lorain water plant and when the backup generator failed due to a switch malfunction, water pressure in the area dropped. A boil order was issued for 1,000 homes until January 11.

Police: Fake fire inspector steals from Philly landmarks.
A man known to mimic civil servants was arrested after stealing several items worth thousands of dollars by imitating a Philadelphia fire inspector. He wore a uniform and provided false credentials while demanding to conduct inspections on various properties he burglarized.
